Acer has become the first global brand to launch a tablet in the sub-Rs 8,000 range. The 7-inch Iconia B1 is priced at MRP of Rs 7,999 and comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS.
While it boasts a configuration of 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a front-facing video camera, 8 GB internal storage expandable up to 32 GB; it does not have a rear camera and also lacks 3G data and voice calling options. The B1 offers Wi-Fi connectivity, and a resolution of 1024 x 600.
Acer will drive the sales of B1 through its partner network and claims that in its price-range it’s the best featured tablet available. “The tablet PC market in India has been one of the fastest growing segments and has potential to grow further in 2013. As a global leader, we are committed to introducing devices that follow high standards of quality and reliability. The Iconia B1 is a product that is geared to exceed consumer expectation while guaranteeing a wholesome experience,” said S Rajendran, CMO, Acer India.
Currently none of the global brands have a product in the sub-Rs 8,000 range. However, in 2013, entry-level full-featured tablets from global brands are expected to breach the Rs 10,000 price band and further fuel demand for tablets which have grown exponentially over the past two years.
According to a recent study by Cyber Media Research, India is estimated to have sold 3 million tablets in 2012 a six time growth over the 0.5 million units it sold in 2011. The study further projects doubling of tablet sales in 2013 to 6 million.
